We'll talk about tips, camera, wifi, 3G, apps and much more. Be welcome!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger18125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2149235292856853001.post-81118490376285836002011-08-24T20:06:00.000-07:002011-08-24T20:06:04.220-07:00Temporary blog shutdown.Taking care of two blogs at the same time has proven it hard, more than I can handle. Fortunately, the brazilian <a href="http://minhavidacomx10.blogspot.com/">blog</a> is doing great in terms of visits (not revenue, should I say). It has only gotten there because I received help; my professional life is taking up a lot of the time I thought I could spare on blogging.<br />
<br />
I am still eager for more audience, I wanna help even more people, specially outside Brazil, but I`m not going to be able to do it just now. Im working on some partnerships with other blogs and those might help me (and you all) out in the near future.<br />
<br />
Let`s see how things will behave in the next couple of months.<br />
<br />
You can find a lot, lot more at <a href="http://minhavidacomx10.blogspot.com/">Minha Vida com X10</a>.<br />
<br />
I sincerely hope to see you again soon.<br />

Try Lightbox for Android!I admit it: there was an iOS-only app that made me jealous of them: Instagram.Well, thats history, because now Xperia X10 has <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lightbox.android.photos">Lightbox for Android</a>, a social photo-sharing app much like <a href="http://instagr.am/">Instagram</a>, but there's a lot more!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://ssl.gstatic.com/android/market/com.lightbox.android.photos/f-1-c58a0b6c850c798bba3a48d13ed1c9dd1b77a158" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="195" src="https://ssl.gstatic.com/android/market/com.lightbox.android.photos/f-1-c58a0b6c850c798bba3a48d13ed1c9dd1b77a158" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a>Lightbox app can replace your phone's camera: you can take the picture and apply filters to it; sharing it to Facebook twitter or foursquare is just a click away. Add a coment, a place (fastest GPS lock I've seen so far in any app/device!) and voilá! It's online! Pictures are taken at around 800 x 500 pixels resolution and end up at some 50KB in size, so easily "uploadable"...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ8G1O6GAgOUVpSEs379qHeEwYBjrIHxfJ_3oVIxWMcg80hHfwrbqIed_r_uAmhfmwDvk6PcbyCYnHFI_5hu57LySdZr3uIShi7TIO73kYlNt90G4-AHQ5TZ9RSQAhfUdOe6M22Wpbx-Y/s1600/lightbox_filters.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ8G1O6GAgOUVpSEs379qHeEwYBjrIHxfJ_3oVIxWMcg80hHfwrbqIed_r_uAmhfmwDvk6PcbyCYnHFI_5hu57LySdZr3uIShi7TIO73kYlNt90G4-AHQ5TZ9RSQAhfUdOe6M22Wpbx-Y/s400/lightbox_filters.png" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4jjv8B_sK5IR9CozliqeF3DagJPH71aB6iMo6FN9JyZjhL4227iVLC974Vw1Pb9bjPu03UrgvB31jBNsrbJ_Tw3sDxXlvztRZPfDc1wqPrVV9g-Ujpp3R0CGuwO9pK3ZFbkoFJvTr1tc/s1600/lightbox_comments.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4jjv8B_sK5IR9CozliqeF3DagJPH71aB6iMo6FN9JyZjhL4227iVLC974Vw1Pb9bjPu03UrgvB31jBNsrbJ_Tw3sDxXlvztRZPfDc1wqPrVV9g-Ujpp3R0CGuwO9pK3ZFbkoFJvTr1tc/s400/lightbox_comments.png" width="400" /></a></div><br />
There's also the social character of showing all photos from your friends networks. It feels a little bit like Timescape wanted to be, but Lightbox is faster, and better. You can zoom in photos, comment them or like them (yup, it works!).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_nBiLvx5VG2OGzN4OWYgNTFCaM3esRDrLfo3rrt-3W3i-w46Hh-QcY3XWp19bHkP0drAgtxhnWKFQHspAnAVIBmE1wdUS-1lXxIgUR7rxGo1FQ-9Th3nyRrYNUMUzqv5mEnvzhLuruF4/s1600/lightbox.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_nBiLvx5VG2OGzN4OWYgNTFCaM3esRDrLfo3rrt-3W3i-w46Hh-QcY3XWp19bHkP0drAgtxhnWKFQHspAnAVIBmE1wdUS-1lXxIgUR7rxGo1FQ-9Th3nyRrYNUMUzqv5mEnvzhLuruF4/s400/lightbox.png" width="223" /></a></div><br />
Another cool feature: news screen. Instead of headlines you get photographs. Genius!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitOSz93w6t6SzeHGqiYTi1knf20OfTjIvnXPdHKRAjzA-wAs3cE2mfVR4E5IAyD3wfxSZ3pWUZTC67wZ2YU6xgLY7igZ94AlVwiMHEPj2APVI23sYlzitEm0S7ZCgGOphljc1HuK_IOQ0/s1600/lightbox_news.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitOSz93w6t6SzeHGqiYTi1knf20OfTjIvnXPdHKRAjzA-wAs3cE2mfVR4E5IAyD3wfxSZ3pWUZTC67wZ2YU6xgLY7igZ94AlVwiMHEPj2APVI23sYlzitEm0S7ZCgGOphljc1HuK_IOQ0/s400/lightbox_news.png" width="223" /></a></div><br />
Lightbox chose a different market strategy being released solely to Android. I've been using it since beta version and I am pretty satisfied with it. I recommend it!<br />

<br />
If you have your X10 rooted, why not explore it some more? Perhaps one of the easiest files to tweak is the build.prop, at /system/ folder. That file contains several systems settings that can be changed. Many different ROMs have different configuration setups according to the creators will or objective. Check out some examples (the last one is the best)! TIP: use a file manager with a good text editor. I suggest <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer">Root Explorer</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO34zpbw9pdNlaS_J2BgF9FoxkAM4CQI71wmRfbl-Eyw7n1-30dEt4qElOShqtgLO2EqInP2GRiaA55glyax2_wYU85I2SpH9yVt2bRi_5z7bUS68kqI6dqj5rFLdvp3XACtxtjdWxrqA/s1600/home+full.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO34zpbw9pdNlaS_J2BgF9FoxkAM4CQI71wmRfbl-Eyw7n1-30dEt4qElOShqtgLO2EqInP2GRiaA55glyax2_wYU85I2SpH9yVt2bRi_5z7bUS68kqI6dqj5rFLdvp3XACtxtjdWxrqA/s400/home+full.png" width="223" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a><b>Basic device settings can be usually found at the beginning of the file:</b> here you can fool the web browser or any other app to think your device is any other you write. Not clearly useful, but it works!<br />

You might have already stumbled upon the names MIUI and CyanogenMod. What are these things?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_0eTHpqMmq98QG0cS1MoktHvgpO-vUInb-5seY5GMFWqyi5oBtxtT-z-_IeMccW-cZAcTtZCNEeuQ5CoNNGKcMUJemRVH0RArpcA-pwGyHo6JPuDKATfrEDxt_Me32MufeFXXJLbx2q0/s1600/miui+cyanogen.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="88" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_0eTHpqMmq98QG0cS1MoktHvgpO-vUInb-5seY5GMFWqyi5oBtxtT-z-_IeMccW-cZAcTtZCNEeuQ5CoNNGKcMUJemRVH0RArpcA-pwGyHo6JPuDKATfrEDxt_Me32MufeFXXJLbx2q0/s400/miui+cyanogen.PNG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<a href="http://www.miuiandroid.com/">MIUI</a> and <a href="http://www.cyanogenmod.com/">CyanogenMod</a> are both Android OS customizations. Their ROM's are knows for bringing to Android some functionality mobile manufacturers often hide from their customers and also new capabilities like easy theme changing, apps from other devices and so on.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<a href="http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-miui-rom-for-android-miui-port-complete-guide/">I've learnt</a> that MIUI is built over the 2.2 Froyo Android OS, which means you'll have a lot of performance right from the beginning. The first MIUI ROMs were built from scratch in China (the very first was completely written in Chinese!) and they look a lot like the iOS; not only visually, but practically, as there's no app drawer, for example. Its also has the feeling of the Samsung TouchWiz interface. After all, it's like having the best of each manufacturer altogether on the Xperia X10. The strength and interest over MIUI ROMs realy heavily on its customization power: you can tweak pretty much every visual setting from icons to lock-screen and app docks. In fact, the MIUI lock-screen is supposed to be slid down and you have to option to do so while choosing if you want the dialer or sms app started (the actual slider is three-fold). However, MIUI ROM's look a lot like iOS; so much that many of us Android users can find extremely unpleasant. Here are some screenshots:<br />

</tbody></table>CyanogenMod ROMs are (now) based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and brings very good things beyond the Gingerbread capabilities themselves. They can handle advanced media formats, widgets, themes and feature camera and connectivity improvements, and excellent performance and battery life. Some screens:<br />

You should know that neither MIUI nor CyanogenMod were originally built for the Xperia X10. That explain why we can find so many different ROMs at the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/">XDA forums</a> (<a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=74289935">FreeXperia</a>, <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=74289904">FreeX10</a>, <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=74289858">TripNRaVeR</a>). I've tested a bunch of them myself (take some time through this blog or <a href="http://minhavidacomx10.blogspot.com/">its older pt-br version</a> for more). The open source world is all about sharing info and knowledge, that's why our X10 ROMs sport a little bit of everything available. Its fun to try different things and to realize that the Xperia X10 can handle them all!<br />

Android 2.3 Gingerbread might be around the corner!With the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread for Xperia X10 release date getting close (possible Q2/Q3 2011) , some users at the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099027">XDA forums</a> began receiving software updates to firmware 2.1.B.0.1 and baseband 2.1.67. This is not 2.3, yes, but it feels like Sony Ericsson is preparing for a major rollout!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=608918&d=1306507608" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=608918&d=1306507608" width="213" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x10_update-news-2702.php">Sources</a> report that this firmware updates grant better screen responsiveness, increase battery life and present minor visual tweaks and enhancements. You can install the newest software via Flashtool following <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936733">this link</a>, yet the new firmware ROM is still "branded". I'll keep waiting for a global, clean ROM to come out.<br />

<br />
You knew <i><a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/services/facebook-inside/overview">Facebook Inside Xperia</a></i> was coming to the newest Xperia handsets and we thought it would never come to the Xperia X10. Recently, tough, Sony Ericsson announced its plans on releasing the integrated service for the Xperia X10. On the word of the <a href="http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/05/26/update-on-facebook-inside-xperia/">official SE product blog</a>:<br />
<blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Verdana, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;">I’ve seen lots of questions around the previously announced upcoming Gingerbread update for the Xperia™ X10. The work is progressing well and I hope to have final confirmation on what features etc it will contain within short and then do a blog post about it covering your most frequently asked questions. One thing I can confirm already now is that Facebook inside Xperia currently is planned to come to the Xperia™ X10 too.</span></blockquote>One Facebook login will be enough to enable the amazing new "like", lockscreen notifications and other features. Check the promo video below!<br />

Once the Xperia X10 bootloader has been cracked, developers began to try even further to explore the possibilities of customizing and experimenting with the phone. Aside from Android development, tests have been made so the Xperia could run completely different operational systems and you see here three successful stories: an Xperia X10 running Windows 95, another on running Linux (Unbuntu Lucid CHROOT) and the last one running Backtrack 5 (digital security Linux build).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/5710121039_b04658db00.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3144/5710121039_b04658db00.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
One might ask: why? I believe the answer is pretty simple: because we can! I feel this open source world is a great place to explore, discover and learn. I ask back: why not?<br />

You'll need the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076583">ROM from the XDA developer TripNRaVeR</a> and <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960527">baseband 49</a>.<br />
<br />
<ul><li>Backup your stuff (contacts, sms, settings, current rom)</li>
<li>Flash baseband 49 via <a href="http://mylifewithx10.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html">Flashtool</a></li>
<li>Flash Trip's rom via <a href="http://mylifewithx10.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html">xRecovery</a></li>
<li>Leave the phone alone for a few minutes (some reboots)</li>
<li>Enjoy!</li>

They are bigger and more powerful than its predecessors and now sport a Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS!<br />
<br />
Check out what else have changed:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/file/1.986341.1304527007!translation/image/xperia_mini-s..product-1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/file/1.986341.1304527007!translation/image/xperia_mini-s..product-1.PNG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The newer mini are a little bit bigger in total size (5mm is the largest difference between the old and the new mini), but have a bigger and better screen: 3" instead of 2", higher resolution 320x480 and 16M colors on the Reality Display, powered by Bravia Mobile Engine! The 5MP camera will record HD videos and the longer-lasting batteries will help the minis a lot!<br />
<br />
But the bigger differences are OS-wise: the newest Android 2.3 Gingerbread is here to stay, helped by the 1GHz processor and more internal and RAM memory! The UI has been improved, with the four corners now holding folders, with up to four icons each! The phones will also feature the <a href="http://mylifewithx10.blogspot.com/2011/05/facebook-inside-xperia-xperia-x10-out.html">Facebook Inside Xperia</a> right at launch!<br />
<br />

Xperia X10 out of the plans.Ever heard of the Facebook Inside Xperia feature?<br />
<br />
It's a new integration between the newest Xperia phones (including the newest Xperia mini and mini pro) and Facebook. According to the official <a href="http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/05/05/facebook-lives-inside-xperia%E2%84%A2/">Sony Ericsson Product Blog</a>, half the time spent on apps worldwide is due to the Facebook app, so exploring that, the company announced this may 5th the Facebook Inside Xperia.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/files/2011/05/Facebook-inside-Xperia-arc-490x197.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/files/2011/05/Facebook-inside-Xperia-arc-490x197.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
It will allow users to sign in to Facebook on the phone, so they wont have to sign in again ever after, savign time and trouble. The service will roll-out Q2 this year, and will enhance Facebook contact sync, calendar sync, photo sharing (with Facebook photos on the phones gallery). Theres will also be a new "Like" button on the music player and a Media Discovery Widget, that will show friends' music and video recommendations, including those made via Youtube or Spotify.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, the Xperia X10 is not a compatible phone.<br />
<br />

<br />
You have an amazing Xperia X10 at hand, you've changed or customized your Android OS and yet you feel your device sluggish. Its probably because of your SD Card. In the Android environment, the data reading/writing speed depends more on the cache memory than the SD Card class. Here you will learn to measure that speed and improve it! You wont regret opening the 3D Gallery anymore!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCmvr-anOYqo7KED-hTmkCd9hU9RU9OSq8fuHvRjGBKEIO6LeaDGbZpg5GOVw3sLwvRKz3TJDcv3J4Du6B8lcUcMGT7fHBhvK1xAJorI0bbiRNycLG8ofJf2KNVTDX3J5D8jQPMTSYViR_/s1600/sddepois6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCmvr-anOYqo7KED-hTmkCd9hU9RU9OSq8fuHvRjGBKEIO6LeaDGbZpg5GOVw3sLwvRKz3TJDcv3J4Du6B8lcUcMGT7fHBhvK1xAJorI0bbiRNycLG8ofJf2KNVTDX3J5D8jQPMTSYViR_/s400/sddepois6.png" width="223" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Here are the 2 free apps that will get the job done (be sure to have a <a href="http://mylifewithx10.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-to-root-your-xperia-x10.html">rooted</a> device):<br />

You probably know that 2.3 is here to stay and that an official version will come out later this year, but here is something you probably dont already know: Android 3 Honeycomb is being ported to the Xperia X10. <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Despite its pre-alpha status, its good to know that the lovely Xperia X10 can still draw the developers atention. So far you can turn the device on, charge it, access wifi, GPS and its touchscreen. Not much else can be done and thats where us testers come into play. <br />
Every new Android development needs testers so we can feedback the developers. If you have the courage to help, be sure to make a xRecovery backup and drop by the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057309">xda developers forum</a> to help out and be part of this history. <br />

Battery and memory saving options.I am sure you have heard once in your X10 life that you should use a decent task killer to kill apps running on background. After all, you have a 1GHz phone that behaves like a dumbphone (if not worse) in terms of speed. Some say killing apps saves battery and memory.<br />
<br />
Don't be fooled!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
It's not a memory issue, but a processor issue:<br />
Its fine to have apps in background, as long as they don't waste your "processing power". To check how's your phone performance, i'd suggest apps like <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite">Watchdog Task Manager</a> that show you hows every app using your phone's processor. That way you can spot the few apps that may have been slowing you down and wasting your battery juice and kill them.<br />
<br />
You would notice that most of the apps running on background never use more than 0.5% of your phone. Killing more apps than needed would just slow you back down as you have to wait them to completely open every time you need them. Keeping them on background would cut the access time and save battery after all!<br />
<br />
If you really have a battery issue, try lowering screen brightness, disable auto 2G/3G search (choose only one network instead). Know that Android, specially from 2.2 and later, have excellent memory management options, that way you shouldn't have problems using your phone the way it was meant to be. Try having your phone as up to date as possible (why not having <a href="http://mylifewithx10.blogspot.com/2011/04/android-22-froyo-on-xperia-x10.html">Android 2.2 Froyo</a> or 2.3 Gingerbread on??).<br />

<br />
I realized not all of us have multi-touch (dual-touch + pinch to zoom) enabled on our X10. Some carriers blocked Android upgrades, other people have old custom ROMs, some have problems with Sony Ericsson Update Service or PC Companion. Don't worry, you'll learn here how to enable it; it requires <a href="http://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=2149235292856853001&postID=3592401726058571444">root access</a>, but it won't wipe any personal data or files!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I learnt the process <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920669">here</a> as described by <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1346722">Bin4ry</a>, I'm just making it easy for all of us gathering all in a single post!<br />
<br />
<b>REQUIREMENTS</b><br />
<br />
<ul><li><a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746">Flashtool</a></li>
<li><a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer">Root Explorer</a> or other app that can access and change system files (for stock Android 2.1) </li>
<li>The <a href="http://www-stud.uni-due.de/~sfanmakr/X10Flash/X10_1.0_Bin4ry_Dualtouch.ftf">firmware addon</a></li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>HOW-TO</b></div><div><br />
</div><div>If you have flashtool installed, you can skip this initial part. Just make sure you download the addon to the \flashtool\firmware folder</div><div><ul><li>Install Flashtool on PC</li>
<ul><li>Install x10 <a href="http://www.4shared.com/file/LHL0A__U/ggsetup-22010.html">drivers</a> (\flashtool\drivers folder)</li>
<li>Enable USB Debugging (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging)</li>
</ul><li>Open Flashtool</li>
<li>Click Flash</li>
<li>Choose the dualtouch file and click ok</li>
<li>DONE</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>IF YOU HAVE STOCK ANDROID 2.1</b></div></div><div><br />
</div><div>In this case, you'll need to perform more file changes manually. There's a chance the initial process doesn't work for all apps; then you'll need to do these next steps too. That's where Root Explorer comes in handy. Thanks to <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=426752">MyImmortal</a>.</div><div><br />
</div><div><ul><li>On Root Explorer, access \system folder, find build.prop, long click on it and pick Open in Text Editor</li>
<li>At the end of the file, add these commands and save:</li>
<ul><li>ro.product.multi_touch_enabled = true</li>
<li>ro.product.max_num_touch=2</li>
</ul><li>Download this <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?bhsw8a345qk91be">other file</a> and put it in the \etc\permissions folder</li>
<li>Long-press on it and select Permissions</li>
<ul><li>Check the first whole column and the item from the second column</li>
</ul><li>Reboot your phone.</li>
<li>DONE</li>

<br />
Yes, I have Froyo (Android 2.2) running on my Xperia X10! It feels really great! Awesome speed, great performance! While Sony Ericsson doesn't take us officially to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, its possible to use a very nice Android 2.2 Froyo ROM developed at the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/">XDA Forums</a>. Everything works nicely, including HD recording and dual-touch. Its free and easy!<br />
<br />
Before starting, know the risks involved and give credits to the ROM creator at XDA.<br />
<br />
<b>REQUIREMENTS</b><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><ul><li>An Xperia X10 with <a href="http://mylifewithx10.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-to-root-your-xperia-x10.html">root access</a></li>

<li><a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960527">Baseband 2.1.54</a></li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>INDEX</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>Here's what we will do:</div><div><ol><li>Install FlashTool</li>
<li>ROOT</li>
<li>Install xRecovery</li>
<li>Install the proper baseband</li>
<li>Install the ROM</li>
<li>Recover backups</li>
</ol><div><br />
</div><div><b>HOW TO</b></div></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>This is a very dense tutorial (to keep it as clear as possible). You may have some things already done, so feel free to skip to next steps whenever you feel comfortable. Otherwise, stay close to the guide</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>Part 1 - Installing FlashTool</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>FlashTool is the tool used to root the phone and install the baseband.</div><div><ul><li>Go to the website and download the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746">most recent version</a>. Install it on your computer</li>
<li>Activate USB Debugging on your phone: Settings > Apps > Developmento > USB Debugging</li>
<li>Install X10 <a href="http://www.4shared.com/file/LHL0A__U/ggsetup-22010.html">drivers</a> (also found on \flashtool\drivers folder)</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>Part 2 - ROOT</b></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2l6ma0lGgA2z3MLeaL80YzZW4uYghp6lvdwrIXByLgs_Ecc2UpljHzc0usB0HJ4vA8c2-Z1KEvQZktRlBPc2Wl3IAEPAneTXIjJU7KYy3m4HDNrVKUdYZWLC9g0w0lpfGqHW4j7Pb4HY/s1600/imagem4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="117" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2l6ma0lGgA2z3MLeaL80YzZW4uYghp6lvdwrIXByLgs_Ecc2UpljHzc0usB0HJ4vA8c2-Z1KEvQZktRlBPc2Wl3IAEPAneTXIjJU7KYy3m4HDNrVKUdYZWLC9g0w0lpfGqHW4j7Pb4HY/s400/imagem4.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br />
</div><div><ul><li>Open FlashTool, plug the phone and click ROOT</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div></div><div><b>Part 3 - Installing xRecovery</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>xRecovery is the app that installs Android 2.2. It uses the busybox UNIX tools package to handle Android codes and you need to download that too.</div><div><ul><li>Donwload <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=stericson.busybox">Busybox from the Android Market</a></li>
<ul><li>Open the app and click Install</li>
</ul><li>Download <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571">xRecovery</a> and install it</li>
<ul><li>Open the app and click Install (the three icons must become green)</li>
</ul></ul><div>To know if xRecovery is working, reboot your phone ad keep pressing the BACK key when the Sony Ericsson logo appears until you see this:</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgID9bG0z2lTX_Mq-xfxFuQx_MRsQaaoehTrbzLOPwfPR9AwghBMh1UZdh1HwB0za1SO4dsJo1Hbps0dXZV9FWMOv5kiiFZRW9fWIIRzY3Oos8M23JEiSWs57nKai93opxZKMEatZTmUbo/s1600/imagem5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgID9bG0z2lTX_Mq-xfxFuQx_MRsQaaoehTrbzLOPwfPR9AwghBMh1UZdh1HwB0za1SO4dsJo1Hbps0dXZV9FWMOv5kiiFZRW9fWIIRzY3Oos8M23JEiSWs57nKai93opxZKMEatZTmUbo/s320/imagem5.JPG" width="181" /></a></div><div>To navigate through its menus, use the volume keys to move up or down, the home key to select and the back key to return. For now, choose <i>reboot phone</i>.</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>Extra tip: ROM backup</b></div><div><br />
</div><div>If you have xRecovery working its a good time to backup you current ROM</div><div><ul><li>At xRecovery, choose <i>Backup and Restore</i> and click Backup</li>
<ul><li>At any time (specially if something goes deeply wrong) you can return to xRecovery and choose <i>Restore</i> to get your X10 back to its original state, like if nothing happened (all settings back!)</li>
</ul></ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>Part 4 - Installing the proper baseband</b></div></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>The FreeX10 ROM needs the 2.1.54 baseband to work. To know what baseband you have, go to Settings > About the Phone > Baseband. If you are not at 2.1.54, you can download it at the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960527">XDA Forums</a>. Be aware that there are different basebands for each X10 model. Your phone's model is written under the battery of your X10 (dont trust the "about phone" readings this time)</div><div><ul><li>Extract the baseband to \flashtool\firmwares folder</li>
<li>Open FlashTool and click Flash. You should see a screen like this:</li>
</ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTBP4PWcEeYX0doSyGv_i_FKomRByBq-8sJlpbMPG0C6K520FXiwPcc-cunFUmUSJ0nwO_3_G5CW_yTt2FAjzD25vlWY8xcgjNvC8IIH0Gk6_-WjK-k5dtJvQ2qzK-k4A20fYhlF5qFaE/s1600/imagem7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTBP4PWcEeYX0doSyGv_i_FKomRByBq-8sJlpbMPG0C6K520FXiwPcc-cunFUmUSJ0nwO_3_G5CW_yTt2FAjzD25vlWY8xcgjNvC8IIH0Gk6_-WjK-k5dtJvQ2qzK-k4A20fYhlF5qFaE/s400/imagem7.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><ul><li>Click OK</li>
<li>Plug the phone in flash mode (read screen instructions)</li>
<ul><li>Unplug USB</li>
<li>Turn off the phone</li>
<li>Press and hold back key</li>
<li>Plug USB</li>
<li>A green led will lit</li>
</ul></ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCwNEOBNuQqizKz1BKgjSlLqpvr1Eh97JZCMuMo5isGAsAXc8IQd9IeJjmUr8pEIgEkhnu1yvXHx_3AB1fHMvq3FUzjXtF6U8vfJA408KeA3ehd7huqUiP8yIzD8Ddsd8hZnfzCD6omKA/s1600/imagem8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCwNEOBNuQqizKz1BKgjSlLqpvr1Eh97JZCMuMo5isGAsAXc8IQd9IeJjmUr8pEIgEkhnu1yvXHx_3AB1fHMvq3FUzjXtF6U8vfJA408KeA3ehd7huqUiP8yIzD8Ddsd8hZnfzCD6omKA/s400/imagem8.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><ul><li>Baseband installation will begin automatically and shouldn't take longer than a minute</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>Extra tip: backup contacts and apps</b></div></div></div></div><div><br />
</div><div>You can use <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup">Titanium Backup</a> to backup apps and settings or <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync">SMS Backup</a> to backup your SMSs on Gmail. To backup your contacts, you can synchronize Gmail contacts (Contacts > Menu > Accounts > Sync Gmail) or save them on your SD card (Contacts > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD Card). When restoring contacts, choose either Gmail or SD card, not both, otherwise you'll get everyone doubled!</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>Part 5 - Installing the ROM</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>Finally! We're ready to boost the X10!</div><div><ul><li>Download the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900441">ROM files</a></li>
<ul><li>FreeX10-beta4.zip (the actual ROM)</li>
<li>FreeX10-beta4-hotfix1.zip (installs HD recording)</li>
<li>gapps_FreeX10.zip (installs Google apps, like Gtalk, Android Market, YouTube)</li>
</ul><li>Save all three on your SD card</li>
<li>Be sure you have more than 50% battery</li>
<li>Reboot phone and access xRecovery</li>
<li>Click <i>Install Custom Zip</i></li>
<ul><li>Navigate to the folder you saved the ROM and install the first file (should take a minute)</li>
<li>Install the second file (takes more than a minute)</li>
<li>Intall the third file (less than a minute)</li>
</ul><li>Reboot phone</li>
<li>At first startup, leave the phone alone for about 10 minutes until it reaches your radio signal (mobile signal)</li>
<li>Don't reinstall xRecovey or Busybox, ever! You might brick your phone</li>
<li>DONE!</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>Part 6 - Recovering backups</b></div></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>Install Titanium backup again and pick backup/restore, scroll through the apps list and Restore those you want!</div><div><br />
</div><div><b>WHAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG?</b></div><div>If something goes terribly wrong, you can always go to xRecovery and restore your previous ROM. If you can't do that, hit PC Companion or <a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en">Sony Ericsson Update Service</a> and get the original firmware back on. You can also flash a <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746">global clean ROM</a> with FlashTool.</div><div><br />
</div><div>Have fun! Write any doubts on the comments session. Be clear about your questions, write down your phones specs/settings and I'll answer as quickly as possible! Let's all have the best out of the X10 hardware! Til next time! Don't hesitate on donating!</div><br />

<br />
Before we begin, let me explain what is this blog to ensure you are in the right place and we don't waste each other's time!<br />
<br />
This is the international version of the <a href="http://minhavidacomx10.blogspot.com/">Minha Vida com X10</a> blog. It's meant to show a little bit of my daily experience with the Xperia X10 smartphone. We'll talk about the good stuff and also the bad things about it.<br />
<br />
I'm not supported by Sony Ericsson nor any other company. It's a personal blog, an open space to share feelings, find out solutions, to suggest and to learn; an test environment for apps, sounds and images.<br />
<br />
I made the original blog in portuguese because it was my first blog and I wanted to hit it's target audience: brazillian owners of the Xperia X10 (you might guess smartphones aren't that popular here, and those who have it usually don't have a clue about their devices' powers or features). Now I wanna make this whole thing international because I realized not to many people around the Xperia X10 world really know how to improve their experience with this handset.<br />
<br />
I'm not an expert. I'm a regular user trying to help. Maybe sharing some tips in english will allow more people around the world to become happy after all. And maybe I can learn new things here, so I can "spread the Xperia X10 word". I will try to keep the tutorials as simple as possible, after all it's meant to be read by the regular Xperia X10 owner: you and me!<br />
<br />
I invite you to join this discussion and make your X10 experience more pleasant, always. Be welcome!<br />
